Mama Comma | Seongsu | Seoul Cafe Review
Mama Comma is a new art studio themed cafe that managed to exceed my expectations and let me down all at once. :-)
I wasn’t expecting too much going in, but the space immediately stood out. It leans heavily into this art studio / exhibition vibe and actually commits to it in a way that feels intentional instead of just aesthetic for the sake of Instagram.
The whole place is lined with art, and even the plating follows through on the theme — drinks and food come on paint palette-style plates, with cream cheese placed where the paint would go. It’s a really cute touch. Also, the staff were super kind and patient with me despite my limited Korean, which I really appreciated. :)
Today’s set of food:
Soboro Bread Roll, Almond Crunch Bagel, and their Strawberry Latte
① Soboro Bread Roll
I ordered this without really knowing what it was and… omg. Soboro is a Korean pastry topped with a peanut and brown sugar mixture that can have red bean inside. (I did not expect this combo at all) The outside is soft and slightly flaky with a bit of crunch, and the inside is where it really shines. The red bean isn’t overwhelming at all which makes it super easy to enjoy, and the almond adds a really nice texture to everything. I genuinely didn’t expect to like this as much as I did. It’s one of those things where halfway through eating it you’re already thinking about buying another.
For 4,500 won too… this feels kind of under-priced? They could charge more and I’d still think it’s worth it. I really want to try this fresh and warm.
Score:
10/10, easily the best thing I had here Unrelated but this place really leans into the “art cafe” concept in a way I actually like. It doesn’t feel half-committed and that makes a big difference.
② Almond Crunch Bagel
This one was… fine. Coming off the soboro, expectations were definitely high which didn’t help. The bagel itself is really chewy — like too chewy to the point where it’s kind of hard to bite into or cut cleanly. The toppings also don’t have a super strong flavor, and the cream filling inside is just okay. They do give you extra cream cheese spreads on the side for free which is nice. I liked the green onion one the most. That said, having a cream-filled bagel + extra cream cheeses feels like a bit much. Maybe this would be better toasted? As-is, I’d probably skip it next time.
Score:
5/10, not bad, just kind of underwhelming
③ Strawberry Latte
Really cute presentation, and I like the cup a lot. After mixing, this was easily the sweetest thing I ordered. The strawberries themselves were soft and didn’t have that weird processed sourness, but they also weren’t especially sweet either. Most of the sweetness feels like it’s coming from the syrup. It’s a nice, very “spring” drink — especially during cherry blossom season — but it doesn’t really stand out compared to strawberry lattes from other cafes.
Score:
6/10, solid, slightly above average but the main appeal is the presentation.
Final Thoughts:
I enjoyed my time here and am glad I’ve started looking for new and unproven cafes and restaurants. The space is strong, the concept is cohesive, and it feels like somewhere you can just sit and exist for a bit which I always appreciate. Food-wise, it’s a bit inconsistent. The Soboro bread roll is genuinely excellent and worth coming for, but the rest didn’t quite hit the same level.
I think I’ll be back for another Soboro Roll and maybe to score some of their merchandise, it was that good. Who knows, maybe the bagels were just having a bad day and may impress me next time.
